This indicator shows the percentage of eighth grade students who are proficient or above in English/Language Arts.
Why is this important?
The ability to read proficiently is a fundamental skill that affects the learning experiences and school performance of children and adolescents. Students who are competent readers, as measured by their performance on reading tests, are more likely to perform well in other subjects, such as math and science. Reading achievement also predicts one's likelihood of graduating from high school and attending college.

Technical note: This indicator shows the percentage of students at performance level 3 and 4, using the Accountability Population.
Level 3 indicates that the student is performing at academic expectations for that grade and is on track to being college ready. Level 4 indicates that the student is performing above expectations and is on-track to being college ready.
The Accountability Population is comprised of students who have been enrolled on or before September 20. By looking at the results from students who have been enrolled for a full academic year, one is able to have a clearer representation of the learning and teaching experience.
