Sports Medicine Physicals

A Good Idea

Description

Every May, the Jackson Hospital & Clinic teams up with the Alabama Orthopaedic Specialists and Rehab Associates to provide free sports physicals to student athletes throughout Montgomery. Approximately 100 physicians, nurses, athletic trainers, and non-clinical individuals volunteer their time and expertise for a massive screening and health examination on a single Saturday near the end of the school year. Schools and their teams are assigned a specific time for their routine examinations, which take about 25-30 minutes per student to complete. Specialists are on site for referral if anything unusual is found during the examination.

Goal / Mission

The free sports medicine physicals provided by Jackson Hospital & Clinic helps thousands of parents, 25 schools, and hundreds of coaches ensure that students are healthy enough to participate in athletic programs when school starts in the fall.

Results / Accomplishments

About 1,560 student athletes were given a free physical in 2010. The hospital also assists in providing athletic trainers and emergency treatment stations at most athletic events throughout the school year.
