Career Skills Mentoring Program

An Effective Practice

Description

The Career Skills Mentoring Program (CSMP) provides an opportunity for at-risk youth to experience a work environment while participating in professionally-supported mentoring activities. This program is designed to engage children and encourage them to achieve their academic and personal goals in order to lead successful, self-sufficient lives.

CSMP incorporates mentorship with employment skills. For 6-8 weeks, at-risk students participate in group training and mentoring for one hour per week. Basic employment skills are taught such as how to fill out an employment application, how to create a positive image and "dress for success," and tips for a successful interview. Another component of the program is motivational speakers, who address topics such as the importance of school achievement and the qualities of successful employees. Students then use their newly acquired skills and education to apply for positions with local business partners. Students are then matched with a business mentor for on-the-job guidance. Each student receives meaningful job experience, training, and a stipend.

Goal / Mission

The goal of the program is to provide at-risk youth with mentorship and employment skills.

Results / Accomplishments

Outcomes of the 2009-2010 school year showed that 93% of CSMP students maintained or improved academic performance. In addition, 93% had no out of school suspensions. 100% showed improvement in the areas of self-confidence, competence and caring. 100% received positive evaluations from their business mentors.
