Community Planning Program

A Good Idea

Description

The goal of the Community Planning Program is to provide underserved communities with the tools and support they need to be able to shape equitable, safe, and vibrant neighborhoods throughout San Francisco, CA.

The Community Planning Program works with local residents, workers, stakeholders, and community-based organizations to create physical improvements to the public realm, new community economic development, increased local capacity, and new working relationships between local stakeholders and City government. In addition, the program advocates for affordable housing, economic development, community-oriented citywide planning, and public benefits standards for San Francisco.

Goal / Mission

The goal of the Community Planning Program is to provide underserved communities with the tools and support they need to be able to shape equitable, safe, and vibrant neighborhoods throughout San Francisco, CA.

Results / Accomplishments

As part of their goal of democratizing the use of technologies, the Community Planning Program (CPP) works to facilitate community mapping and participatory action projects. For example, they worked with the San Francisco Housing Development Corporation to map the existing foreclosure sites in certain San Francisco neighborhoods in order to demonstrate the impact of the foreclosure crisis.

The CPP also worked with the Western South of Market Citizens Planning Task Force to develop a Community Plan that would maintain and enhance the living, historic, and sustainable neighborhood character of the Western SoMa neighborhood. The CPP contributed to the Community Plan by providing facilitation, analysis, and mapping necessary to develop a comprehensive plan.
