Why is this important?
WIC is a nutrition program that provides nutrition and health education, healthy food and other services to Kansas families who qualify. WIC stands for Women, Infants and Children. WIC’s goal is to help keep pregnant and breast feeding women, new moms and kids under age five, healthy. National studies have documented WIC benefits including reducing fetal deaths, infant mortality and low birth weight rates, as well as improving the growth of nutritionally at-risk infants and children, and the dietary intake of pregnant and postpartum women, which improves weight gain in pregnant women. Pregnant women participating in WIC receive prenatal care earlier. Children enrolled in WIC are more likely to have a regular source of medical care and have more up-to-date immunizations. WIC helps get children ready to start school by improving their intellectual development. WIC significantly improves children’s diets and decreases the incidence of iron deficiency anemia in children.
