Welvista

An Effective Practice

Description

Welvista is a non-governmental healthcare intervention to provide working uninsured residents of South Carolina with prescription medications. Through partnerships with pharmaceutical companies and healthcare providers, Welvista provides name brand prescription medications to qualified patients for one full year in exchange for a $20 application fee. Prescriptions are sent through the mail at no charge to patients. To qualify, adults must be under age 65 and not covered by any form of insurance with a household income at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Level. The public-private partnership of Welvista offers a single source through which healthcare providers and pharmaceutical companies can donate resources.

Goal / Mission

The goal of Welvista is to provide prescription medications to those who cannot afford them.

Results / Accomplishments

Welvista has grown to include 12 pharmaceutical companies and more than 3,000 healthcare providers. In 2008, over 200 name-brand medications were dispensd to more than 12,000 individuals at a value of over $34.5 million. In June 2008, Welvita launched a hospital-based patient advocate program to enroll new patients; in its first year, the Patient Advocate Program dispensed 5,672 prescription medications to 1,800 patients at a value of $1.6 million dollars.
